Alumni Association Scholarship Program
Purpose
The purpose of the Alumni Association Scholarship Program is to recognize outstanding, full-time, undergraduate students of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and to encourage their continued involvement and interest in the activities of the University.
This scholarship program is endowed by financial contributions of alumni and friends of UNC Charlotte, as well as through revenue- producing programs of the Alumni Association, with the goal of rewarding outstanding rising seniors for their academic achievement.
It is the desire of the Alumni Association that at least four (4) alumni scholars be named annually. When there are qualified nominees, it is also the desire of the Alumni Association that at least one Scholarship for Merit is awarded to a non-traditional student in years where at least three (3) scholarships are given. Preference will be given to a recipient 25 years or older, and to someone who has significant family responsibilities as well as some evidence of University/community service.
Criteria
Criteria for selection of alumni scholars shall include demonstrated academic ability, sound character, and ability to articulate; participation in University and/or community activities; campus leadership, and where appropriate, financial need. Nominees should have attained a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5. No consideration shall be given to the applicant’s race, religion, sex, or marital status.
Stipends
Each alumni scholar will receive an annual stipend of at least $2,500, payable in equal amounts for the fall and spring semesters of the award year. The University payment policy will be utilized in making the scholarship disbursements as determined by the Director of Student Financial Aid.
Additional scholarships in amounts less than $2,500 may be awarded by the Association or by various alumni constituent groups or chapters. The recipients of these partial scholarships will not be designated as alumni scholars.
Selection of Recipients
Recipients shall be selected on a competitive basis, with consideration given to academic record, student essay, and faculty recommendation.
Nomination Procedure
Information announcing the availability of the scholarships shall be distributed to each student who meets the academic eligibility criteria. Included will be information outlining the specific procedures of application. Each applicant will be required to submit two (2) references by a member of the University’s faculty or staff. |
